How does hire work?

Our Labour TENS Hire service has 3 steps:


You book your Elle Tens Plus Labour Tens Hire online, letting us know your baby's due date through the booking form. We will then schedule the TENS to arrive with you roughly 4 weeks before you are due. If you are booking ahead but would like to have your TENS delivered earlier, you can request this. You can select Regular Post or Express Post at checkout. If your baby is due in less than 4 weeks, or you select Express Post, will will dispatch your TENS machine ASAP, usually within 1 business day. 


When your TENS arrives, familiarise yourself with the unit and it's accessories. We recommend having a trial run after 37 weeks gestation to make sure you are ready when you go into labour. If you have any problems or questions, please contact us via


Your TENS is due back 8 weeks after you recieved it. When it is time to return the TENS, place the TENS and accessories into the pre-addressed Australia Post envelope and drop it at an Australia Post facility. We will confirm via email when we have received it, and you have the option to subscribe for emails to remind you when the unit is due back.

When during my labour do I use it? 

Midwives recommend using the TENS as soon as contractions become regular. This is likely to be before the contractions are really painful, but don't hold on to the tens for later when you are feeling uncomfortable! It will work better if you begin to use it earlier rather than later, giving those pain-fighting endorphins time to build with the strength of your contractions. 

I am due really soon, do you have machines available and how long will it take to get to me?

We always have machines available, and ship everyday Mon - Fri. If you place an order before 3pm we will endeavor to have it in the mail for you that evening, and for metro areas on the east coast of Australia the estimated delivery is usually one business day. It looks like I will go overdue, can I extend my hire?

Absolutely, we are happy to extend the hire period by 2 weeks at no extra charge, we just ask that you let us know via email so we can keep track of expected return dates for all our machines. 

I have lost my return post parcel, what do I do? 

Unfortunately the return post parcel provided with the Labour TENS Hire once lost is non-refundable, so you will need to purchase a new one at Australia Post (or you are welcome to wrap it yourself) and pay for postage. Please post to;

It is important that you put your name and address details on the back of the parcel otherwise we won't know who has returned their machine. 

Can I use the tens machine with water?

You cannot use the tens machine in the bath or shower as the machine uses electrical pulses to stimulate your nervous system. However the tens can be used safely with any other pain relief method or medication. If you would like to use water as a part of your birth plan, we recommend using the TENS during early labour and progressing to water later, especially if you want to have a water birth.

Will my electrode pads stay sticky?

The electrode pads provided are designed to be re-usable, meaning you can take them off and then reapply them. Just be sure to pop them back onto the film they arrived attached to when you are not wearing them. Residual oil or moisture on your skin will start to erode the stickiness of your pads, so if you are in and out of the shower several times, or sweating, make sure to dry your back completely before reapplying.

You can 'revive' the stickiness of your pads by brushing over with a damp fabric cloth. Additional electrode pads are also available for purchase.

If I don't use my TENS, can I have a refund? 

We understand that babies and birth are always unpredictable! If your TENS hasn't been sent out yet, you can let us know to cancel your order and receive a full refund. However, since the Labour TENS Hire is a service, if there is no issue with a faulty machine or delay in postage if you choose not to use the machine or are unable to use it, we have provided the service and therefore cannot provide refunds.
